Ratings: ‘Super Fun Night’ has super fun premiere; ‘Ironside’ starts low; ‘Survivor’ tops ‘X Factor’
What we really learned from the official ratings tonight is simple: If you have a popular “it girl” of entertainment in your cast, viewers will watch you at least once … even if your show is terrible. That is what we got out of “Super Fun Night,” who was so afraid of their pilot episode that they decided not to air it first out of fear it would scare people away.
The show actually did capitalize better on the “Modern Family” lead-in than almost anything else on ABC in the past few years, and scored a rating of 3.2 in the 18-49 demographic that put it at #1 for 9:30. Rebel Wilson was a nice little draw this time, but how will it fare next week? What you have to remember is that quality tends to win out in time, so expect a big drop for week two that makes this show look like much less of a hit.
Speaking of quality winning out, “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” (which is proving itself to be a great season that validates most of the controversial decisions made for it, save for maybe bringing back Colton Cumbie) won the 8:00 p.m. timeslot tonight with a 2.6 after losing out last week. We expect this to last for most of the fall now, which means that we will probably see much more “Survivor” coming up in the future.
The only other new premiere on the night was NBC’s “Ironside,” and a 1.4 for the premiere is basically a plea to just cancel the show now. Blair Underwood may be a good actor, but he just can’t launch a series these days. The hardest thing to swallow here is that there is an opening at this time slot for a hit show, but nothing is rising to the surface here.
As for some other shows in danger, “Back in the Game” (1.8) is already struggling somewhat, and “Revolution” (1.5) is proving now that “The Voice” really was a big help to it after starting out tolerable.
