‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6, episode 2: Peter Weller on controversy within ‘One One Six’
Going into tonight’s “Sons of Anarchy” episode, there are understandably more than just a few questions that most diehard fans have about what could be coming up next. On the heels of what was a pretty horrific school shooting that closed out the premiere, the questions now have many layers. Who is really responsible for this, and what impact could it have on SAMCRO? The episode’s challenge was almost insurmountable for director Peter Weller, who is also playing a guest arc in front of the camera this year.
So explaining his decision to try and help tackle the sensitive topic of shootings where young people are a victim, Weller chose to speak personally in a new interview with Zap2It on the subject, explaining that it hits home for him, as well. However, this method of storytelling is an effective way to really show the ramifications of some of the actions committed by Jax and the other members of the club:
“I’ve got a 2-year-old kid. Everybody’s got kids on the set, and that first episode, you see it. Everyone who’s got a kid is going to go, wow. It’s a very, very touchy subject in the United States right now. Then again, I was thinking about, ‘How touchy is this?’ I was talking to [series creator] Kurt Sutter and some other people and the producers, and they said a very interesting thing. This is a show that’s been about guys flying under the radar by selling guns, and it’s about time that there was a moral culpability … [‘Sons of Anarchy’] now is taking the chickens home to roost. There’s going to be a lot of people saying, ‘This is awful and horrible,’ right? But these are the same people who love the running guns thing. So it is making a statement about guns.”
Tonight’s episode will run for 91 minutes (including commercials), and within that span of time you should have many answers. Also, look for a few potentially heartbreaking scenes between Jax and Tara on the heels of what was a pretty terrible moment that took place in the premiere where Charlie Hunnam and Kim Dickens’ characters got more than a little close to each other.
