‘The Newsroom’ season 2, episode 8 review: Who was fired during ‘Election Night’?
The first part of “The Newsroom’s” two part finale aired tonight, and it was at times a thrill of an episode and supreme entertainment. Then, there were also some moments that we found it to be completely and utterly maddening.
Why in the world did Sloan care more about a book signing than a Presidential election happening in real time? Why force Sloan to deal with some of these ridiculous sort of subplots? As much as we root for her and Don as a potential couple, we were sad to see that they had basically no screen time at all with each other during this episode, and there is only one left in order to do so.
We originally found Mackenzie freaking out over her Wikipedia page to be in the same sort of avenue, but then we found out some information that really gave us some more clarification about it. She was acting out of anxiety and deflection of what the real problem is. She feels like such a failure in the midst of Operation Genoa that she is desperate to cling to something, and that was her feeling of accomplishment at Cambridge. She was desperately hoping to be fired, and it wasn’t until the tail end in which Will did that. Are we really going to have that happen? We’re not quite sure it will stick, given that someone may fire Will at the end of the episode, too. He’s finally about to snap following Genoa, and it could be on the air during election coverage.
The only other major highlights of the night were learning that Jim’s job was also on the line thanks to an error that he made in calling an election early, and Don getting sued by Jerry Dantana over something that he may not be able to win for. If Charlie finds out, he’s probably a goner, especially after giving away an interview with Mitt Romney. Meanwhile, Don’s in hot water for calling Jerry a sociopath, which he may have felt was justified. It still wasn’t something that ACN appreciated, and it put him in a terrible position.
We’re personally in a weird position moving into the finale. We liked this episode fine, but “The Newsroom” has done far better with this improved season. We want to see more of everything coming together this season, and of a small victory. Getting the David Petraeus story could be that, but this team absolutely cannot mess it up.
