‘The Daily Show’: John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac reunite for final show minus Jon Stewart

Going into John Oliver’s eight-week stint on “The Daily Show” this summer, we were honestly just hoping that the British comic would do a good job, and get a few new fans in the process. He’s been great as a correspondent for years, just as he has been a lot of fun during his sporadic guest appearances on “Community.”

But how did Oliver decide to go out as host of the show? With a bang, some recaps, and plenty of laughs. Perhaps the most memorable segment came at the midway point of the show, when he brought on some correspondents to talk about his time, only to instead see all of them tear him a new one over the course of a few minutes. In addition to regulars like Samantha Bee and Jessica Williams, former correspondents Rob Riggle and Wyatt Cenac also returned to remind John how happy they were they left before witnessing his “debacle.”

There were also some mentions of the gifts that Oliver was handed in the way of Paula Deen, Anthony Weiner, and some of the other great international scandals. Without these stories, it could have been harder to come up with great material.

But in the end, Oliver did a pretty fantastic job taking on what had to be a challenging gig. He brought some of his own humor, kept things silly, and never really tried too hard to be Stewart. Of course, we’re hoping that this will lead to him potentially getting a show on Comedy Central at 12:30, following Chris Hardwick’s “@Midnight” this fall.
