‘Buckwild’ officially over; MTV blocks attempts to sell series elsewhere

After the cancellation of “Buckwild” on MTV following the death of cast member Shain Gandee, there were some questions that floated around about whether or not the show could find a life somewhere else. However, all of that seems to be pretty much over.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable network on Friday decided to refuse show producer J.P. Williams the opportunity to take the series to another network in hopes of it continuing there. “Buckwild” had been a strong ratings performer prior to Gandee’s death, and the cast had expressed an interest in continuing in his honor. It’s unclear why the network ultimately decided to not give the show an opportunity, but they may be trying to resist the notion that they made a mistake in refusing to air a second season of the show.

One person who is clearly upset about the decision? Williams himself, who ripped MTV a new one, and even specifically called out executives Van Toffler and Susanne Daniels for their exploitation of some subject matters, but their reluctance to deal with something like death:

“MTV is the most hypocritical network out there … Van and Susanne can keep promoting pre-martial sex and promoting leaving the baby after you have it [on Teen Mom]. I’m so glad they have found their moral bar.”

“Buckwild” had its fair share of fans during its airing earlier this year, but there were also many critics. Some chose to blast the network for their portrayal of West Virginia, whereas others accused the scenes of being manipulated for TV. Just like the show, in the end this was a decision that was not going to satisfy everyone; some will be clearly upset, whereas others may be relieved.
