‘Big Brother Canada’ debate: A twist too far?
For “Big Brother Canada” fans, it’s been one heck of a quiet Easter Weekend. Thanks in part to a new twist hitting the game (which you can see some spoilers for over here), the live feeds have been down at a time in which many people would probably like to see them the most, and we admit there is a part of us that wonders whether this move could actually hurt to spike interest for the show when you have “Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead” finale airing at the same time. One piece of evidence of the live feeds helping drive interest in the show? The shower incident between Tom and Alec; we saw enough of it on the feeds to be interesting, but we still wanted to see what the cast had to say in the Diary Rooms.
As frustrating as the live feeds are, perhaps what may be the most troublesome part of the game right now is simply that you can only twist a game so many times, before the show itself feels almost like a giant twist. We’ll start here by saying first of all that the show is ridiculously entertaining, and the fact that Slice has been good enough to bring “Big Brother” north of the border has made spring TV so much more interesting. However, there are still clearly ways to make it better.
When you look at all of the twists that have been in the game thus far, you really have to ask the following question: do they really make it better? Let’s evaluate some of the big moves so far in the game, and try to see whether or not there impact has been positive or negative thus far.
1. The first Head of Household – We’re not really upset about Suzette getting power from just answering the phone, since the show has always done weird things with their first HoH. The biggest problem with this was forcing Suzette to make nominations without really getting any chance to know anyone, since her picking Emmett and Tom doomed her game from night one.
2. The PowerShift – In forcing Canada to either save Suzette or AJ (and Suzette was obvious at that point, given that AJ had no screen time), they ended up causing Tom to put up and get rid of a good player in Aneal. Imagine how more interesting this past week had been had we not seen Suzette skulk around for five days when we all knew she was going.
3. The double-eviction – It’s bad enough to lose Tom, but Liza? Had she been given a little bit more time with Andrew as Head of Household, she may have been able to sway him. Instead, Emmett just got in his ear right away, and one of the best female gamers was gone.
We will ultimately say this: the results of the new twist, which you will see in action Sunday, have actually created some pretty spectacular drama in the house, but it really doesn’t have so much to do with the twist itself as it does the decisions a few players make. To use a very nerdy comparison, it’s almost like “Game of Thrones”: magic is rare, since you want it to feel special. If there is magic every week, then you start to get a little less enthused about it. “Big Brother” should be more about the players, and not the dynamics thrown at them by production every week.
We’ll get off the high horse now, mostly because we find ourselves having some sort of issue, as entertained as we are, with just about every season of “Big Brother.” Why? We want to see the players like Liza and Aneal go far, and instead we have people like Topaz or Andrew, who have really done very little in the game, still hanging in there. Without the twists, who knows what would have happened? Even if the results were still the same, though, at that point we would only be able to blame the players.

I think that Big Brother challenges are of course to be a Challenge BUT to make Emmett physically sick is not right!! That was out of bounds I feel.

I thought Topaz was actually playing a spectacular social game. It’s shame that Aneal/Liza were evicted so early, and Topaz will be getting the boot soon after Gary’s inevitable eviction :\\

Don’t agree with what went down on Sundays show but I guess Topaz should have realized there could have been more to the twist.

I agree horrible and unfair. No player should be put in that situation especially by the show. I feel as if winning hoh completely screwed Topaz over taking away any chance she had of winning.
Becoming very disappointed in BB Canada it should be FAIR game!!
Thx Big Brother.

Very unfair to have the plans and strategy of only one of the contestants revealed to all, Topaz was not given the opportunity to play the game. Abusive, unfair, and I was shocked you did this…could this be good reason for a lawsuit ????? Too bad all the HG’s can’t hear what the chauvinist white males are saying about their use of the females in the house. The fact that Topaz is up for eviction now is just proof that BB treated her unjustly. Shame on you

I agree with Sue Marion. I’m really disappointed on what was done to Topaz. If she get’s voted off then BB is a big sham and totally unfair and I’ll stop watching.

Dear Big Brother, what you guys did on tonights show was not only hurtful but very abusive toward topaz. Are you guys for real. What right does this show have to not only target one of their players but to get her hated by other players. Shame on all of you.

This is for big brother who are running the show. I think what you did on tonights show was not only hurtful but literally abusive toward topaz. How can people running a show put such a target on a player and have the other people in the house dislike her the way you have. I’m shocked that anyone running a Canadian show would do such a thing. Shame on you

I was so sad when Aneal left instead of suzette. He had the potential to be a really great player. Saving suzette turned out to be pointless since she didnt bother fighting for her place any time she was on the block.

I’m okwith double evictions and fast forwards because we all know there are too many people in the house for the number of weeks the show runs. I’m glad BBCanada has gotten to these earlier. I hated how BB14 backloaded all the extra evictions. We missed out on a lot of Dan strategy and the early weeks dragged. I’m also glad BBCanada hasn’t brought anyone back or saved anyone causing a dead week. But it is a shame Aneal got evicted without having a chance to save himself and cutting the feeds off during this critical strategy time is really disappointing. I’m ok with twists that are part of normal game play but when producer interference and “voting” comes into play it disrupts the natural flow of the game. I want to see the players game their way to the end not randomly get there through a series of non game related twists. It does in a way feel like BBCanada is trying to try a little too hard and needs to back off and let the game breathe and unfold on its own from now on.
