‘Dexter’ season 8 spoilers: Showtime boss talks endgame, compares it to ‘Batman’

Who knew that Dexter Morgan was a caped crusader in his own right? If you believe what Showtime programming head David Nevins had to say during his chat with reporters at TCA on Saturday, you know that he cherishes the “Dexter” franchise so much that he is willing to make comparisons between it and one of the most-beloved superhero sagas of all time.

Without any further ado here, let’s bring you some of Nevins’ comments in full, mostly because they are so interesting and they give you insight into just why it is that this show could still somehow end up receiving a ninth season:

“I do think the endgame and the bringing of Deb into Dexter’s private torment, his turmoil, his story, revitalized the show. The decision to end Dexter is ultimately a creative decision and will be made for creative reasons. Dexter is to Showtime what Batman is to Warner Bros. It’s a core franchise. I want to take care of it in a way that’s respectful to the franchise and respectful to the fans. It’s a pretty tightly written story.”

The one great thing that fans can take from Nevins’ comment here is simple: while everyone loves a good Batman comparison, the important thing here is that he recognizes the importance of letting a show end when it is time for it to. He says nothing about the ratings playing a role, which thus means that the show may not be renewed thanks to viewing figures alone. Instead, it will be dependent on the story.
