NBC’s ‘Smash’ season 2 spoilers: Don’t expect much of a ‘Will & Grace’ reunion
When the news first came out that Sean Hayes was going to be on board “Smash” season 2 for a guest arc, there was understandably a great deal of excitement that perhaps he and his former “Will & Grace” co-star Debra Messing were going to have an opportunity to spend a great deal of time together. However, we’ve quickly found out that anyone hoping for much of an onscreen reunion is going to be pretty disappointed, even though the two do seemingly have some great material lined up.
In speaking on this subject to TVLine, executive producer Josh Safran does his best to explain why there is not going to be much of an opportunity for these two characters to spend time together, and when you think about it, it really does make some sense:
“[With Hayes playing the lead of another show], it wouldn’t have been organic to do it. It would have looked like just a stunt because [his and Julia’s] storylines are not related at all. I felt like the audience would have known that we were forcing something.”
At least it does not look as though like Safran is making this move to point his finger and laugh at the fans; he has the best intentions at heart, and even though these two are not together in any way on the screen, we’re at least excited to see them both on NBC at the same time. (More importantly, we’re also excited to see Messing not drowning in a sea of scarves this time around.) There are many changes coming to the show, and based on what we’ve seen, things are on the road to getting better, even if they are not there all the way yet.
