2013 MTV Movie Awards peg Rebel Wilson as host; brilliant choice?
We don’t agree with many of the hosting choices MTV makes for its awards shows (Chelsea Handler), but they completely and totally got it right this week in booking Rebel Wilson to take on their 2013 MTV Movie Awards. The network is already saying that the up-and-coming star, best known for roles in “Bridesmaids” and “Pitch Prefect,” is set to “redefine the MTV Movie Awards with her top secret plans,” and we actually believe them.
The best thing about Wilson’s selection first and foremost is that the Australian comedienne’s still a fresh face, and she is someone who will draw up curiosity for the show. This is why Billy Crystal was a safe and bad choice for the Oscars earlier this year, as everyone knew just what they were going to get. Nobody has any clue what will happen here!
In addition to that, Wilson is probably going to be unafraid to go the extra mile here to generate a laugh, similar to what Ricky Gervais did the first two years of the Golden Globes or what Russell Brand has done in the past. Not everyone loves this style, but we personally believe that if you are being honored, you can take a little bit of mockery to go along with it. Awards shows, contrary to what recipients may think, are a business. If nobody watches the broadcasts, they cease to exist … especially one like this. We’re not saying that Wilson will necessarily be mean, but she will be surprising.
The only curious move made here is MTV deciding to push up their awards show this year to April 14, whereas the show in the past has aired in June. What’s the reason for this? Our guess is that the network wants more people to watch the show, and summer does not really yield that. Plus, this way there is an easier cut-off date for nominees that are summer movies.
What do you think about Wilson’s selection as a host, and about MTV shifting up the date? If you want to see how the 2012 show fared in the ratings, you can do so here.
