‘Once Upon a Time’ season 2 spoilers: Robert Carlyle on future for Rumpelstiltskin
If there was ever a character on “Once Upon a Time” that is best described as a mystery wrapped inside of an enigma, it is Robert Carlyle’s own Rumpelstiltskin. At one point in his life, this was a cowardly but loving man who just did not know the best way to take care of the people that he loved. However, over time he slowly started to morph into something else entirely after finally possessing some trace of power: a monster, one capable of doing anything and everything to get what he wanted. The only break away from this is Belle, and she has not be able to fully shake him of his old habits just yet.
So what is going to be coming up for Rumple now in the near year? Carlyle spoke to Collider in a new interview on this very subject, and he explained that with the arrival of Captain Hook back in Storybrooke, you are going to find his character’s alter ego of Mr. Gold in a very complicated place:
“The stuff that’s coming up, that I’m just about to do in the next three or four episodes, is mind-blowing … You actually will feel sorry for Gold. There’s his love for Belle and he’s trying to be a better man, but we’ll see how long that lasts.”
Carlyle also said that he is not so much interested in whether or not viewers like or loathe his character, just so long as the work that he is producing for the show is “honest” at the end of the day. We do think we’ll be feeling both emotions for the character moving forward, but as always we have nothing but the utmost respect for the actor.
