Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 13 (finale) spoilers: Saying goodbye

Animal Kingdom season 3

Next week on Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 13, you’re going to witness the end of the road — at least for this summer. This season has been nuts — there’s no other way to describe it, and it only feels like it’s going to get even crazier as everyone tries to unravel what happened at Jed’s compound.

Smurf is dead. That much is clear. There’s not going to be some sort of sudden reawakening of Ellen Barkin as this character. Yet, the finale is entitled “Smurf,” a perfect way to bookend a season that began with an episode entitled “Janine” — her real name. Smurf may be dead, but the final episode of this season is still going to revolve around her. The synopsis below has your evidence of that:

In the aftermath of Smurf’s heist, the Codys work to protect their reputation while friends and enemies from the past close in; Deran realizes there is only one way to keep Adrian safe; Pope and J’s growing tension reaches a boiling point.

There are so many loose ends for the series to tie together. First and foremost, it’s trying to find a way in order to ensure that Smurf’s death looks like it was via natural causes. They have to cover their tracks as best they can and that may be difficult with a bullet in her.

From there, it’s about moving forward. With Smurf dead and her telling J about Adrian tonight, Deran and Adrian have to get out of town. They’ll have an opportunity to start somewhere else if they can. Meanwhile, Pope and J have a lot of underlying tension to resolve. J did kill Pope’s mother, even if Smurf was demanding it. Meanwhile, they haven’t dealt with the fact that J set up Angela to overdose.

There is another season coming beyond next week’s finale, but the question we wonder at present is how the show’s going to be able to keep going if all of these characters are so dispersed? And most importantly, what is this show going to look like without Ellen Barkin? We’ve certainly seen shows lose their main character before and keep going. Take Vikings for example that lost Travis Fimmel and went on a few more seasons. It wasn’t the same show after that loss, but it was still a good show and losing Barkin from the show is going to be no easy loss for viewers.
