Lucifer season 5 will be the end, says EP; should you fight for season 6?

Lucifer

There’s a lot of confusion out there within the Lucifer world right now when it comes to the future of the franchise, and understandably so.

Let’s start things off here with the facts, though. What we know at the moment is that there is going to be a fifth season of the series on Netflix, and it is planned to be the final one. Yet, we also learned recently via star DB Woodside that some of the cast were hoping the show would last until season 6; meanwhile, earlier today star Lauren German posted the following on Twitter:

Thank you sincerely for your words and support. I can’t even believe how much I’ve seen from you all that you want a season 6 and more. As is, we are only doing a S5, however I have to thank you all for the love, interest and encouragement. We adore you, & thank you ❤️ … #Lucifans If you want a season 6 or more let it be heard. We love that you love #Lucifer your support on social media is cherished and important. And if it’s only a season 5…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. We won’t let you down. But if you want more let everyone know ❤️

So what’s going on here, and is there a chance that the series could be coming back for a season 6 beyond the already-announced final season? Well, let’s just say that things are complicated.

In a post on Twitter in response, in part, to German’s tweet, executive producer and co-showrunner Joe Henderson confirmed once more that “season 5 is the end.” He wasn’t intending to pour cold water on anyone’s passion; rather, his perspective is fairly simple. If you’re running a show like Lucifer with a following so devoted and intense, you want to make sure that the series gets a proper conclusion. Giving viewers false hope for a season 6, or writing season 5 without a proper conclusion, isn’t a favorable outcome from his vantage point. Fans do deserve a proper farewell and writing towards a series finale seems to be the best thing for Henderson to do.

Should you still campaign for a season 6?

Sure — passion for a show is great! Yet, if you do so, just be aware of the situation. We don’t think, based on Henderson’s message, that there is a particularly good chance of another season beyond season 5. Yet, there is always a chance and even if Henderson, Ildy Modrovich, and the rest of the writers prepare season 5 as though it’s the final one, it doesn’t necessarily rule out a season 6 — unless, of course, they murder everyone in the season 5 finale (unlikely … or at least we hope so).

A good comparable situation here is CBS’ Elementary. Originally, its sixth season was written as though it would be the final one. Yet, it ended up being renewed for a season 7 and because of that, the writers had to effectively back themselves out of a creative corner.

Our final verdict on the situation

If you want to keep fighting for Lucifer, then keep doing so! Yet, don’t be upset at the writers and showrunners for continuing to plan season 5 as their final one. They can’t control what Netflix does; instead, they want to make sure you get the best ending possible to what has been an excellent story. They’re just doing their job and thinking of viewers first in their own way — and that includes plotting out a final season far in advance.
