Arrow season 8: Writers are back! The challenge ahead
In a new post on Twitter Monday, the show’s official writers’ room confirmed that they are back trying to craft the final ten episodes of the CW series. As you can imagine, doing this is a challenge — an enormous, Herculean one, in fact. You’ve got to tie together seasons’ worth of loose ends in very tiny periods of time. Also, you have to develop and cultivate new story, especially with Crisis On Infinite Earths looming and raising questions aplenty. How is Oliver going to be involved — heck, how are all of these characters going to be involved? With Felicity MIA for the final season and with Oliver opting to go off with The Monitor, it feels like we’re gearing up for separate worlds.
For those who haven’t been a part of the Arrow interwebs for the past several years, the Twitter for the Arrow writers has long been one of the best writers-room accounts out there. They often post a lot of behind-the-scenes goodies and they appreciate/understand the love that the majority of the fans have for this show. It gives them a look inside the process behind it — without giving anything major away, of course! That’s been even more the case under the stewardship of showrunner Beth Schwartz, who opted to make the story even more secretive and under wraps when she took over the gig.
While Crisis will be a tough stretch for these writers to navigate, the hardest take, fittingly, is going to be the series finale. This is the chance to actually tie together the story of Oliver Queen in a proper way — good luck. Series finales are the most difficult episode of any show to write, largely because every viewer has their own idea as to how they want the story to end. This was one of the problems Game of Thrones was always going to run into — we’re not making excuses for their other problems, but this fueled at least some fan reaction. Controversial decisions and a rushed pace probably fueled the rest.

Keep your eyes peeled next month at San Diego Comic-Con. This show’s been a staple there from the beginning and with this being the final send-off, we imagine that there will be some special stuff reserved for it. If the show operates under a reasonably similar timeline, it will have at least a little bit of footage filmed in advance.
Also, did you miss our feature about why Malcolm Merlyn should return? Yes, we totally get that he’s dead … but even in a dream sequence, getting one more dose of John Barrowman is always welcome. (Photo: The CW.)
