Outlander stars Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, more take part in Emmy panel
Today at Westfield Century City, the cast (Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Richard Rankin, and Sophie Skelton) alongside executive producers Toni Graphia and Maril Davis and then production design guru Jon Gary Steele took part in a panel discussion in front of many potential voters. While at this panel, the main subject was some of the performances and stories told during season 4. Heughan and Skelton discussed the famed Jamie – Brianna meeting scene (“The Birds & the Bees” was submitted specifically for the writing category), and there were a few discussions about various other notable moments and some of the important storytelling decisions that were made.
Near the end of the panel, there were briefly some conversation points about season 5 … but it’s hard to get into too many specifics given that Starz didn’t really offer too many to non-attendees. As a matter of fact, this entire panel was rather low-key to people unassociated with the Television Academy. They hadn’t really publicly confirmed who would be attendance at the panel until recently, and beyond that, there was no live stream made available for viewers to watch all over the world.
Oddly, there was also no live-tweeting done by the official show account, which feels a little bit like a missed opportunity to get some attention out there about it. We know that this is a panel more for the benefit of academy members than fans, but still, wouldn’t it be nice to get some more quotes out there for people to see right away?
If you do want to get a few different snippets from the panel now…
You can do that by heading over to the show’s official Instagram, where they posted via their Instagram Stories a few little clips from the discussion. Due to the nature of this medium, though, we suggest that you check them out quickly — they’ll probably be gone before too long.
Overall, do we wish that there was more public information out there immediately about the panel? Sure, but we imagine that it suited what Starz wanted: A chance to get the cast and some important behind-the-scenes people in front of voters. This probably was not the easiest thing to organize, given that it required flying everyone out in the middle of production, and we imagine that they’re going to be heading back to Scotland soon in order to resume production. This is a long, working weekend for the cast, so we hope that they at least get a chance to soak up a little bit of California sun before saying goodbye.
(One of the funnier things about watching the Instagram Stories is that this event was held in the mall, so you can see random shoppers walking by here and there at the edges of the video.)
