Is Happy! season 3 renewed, canceled at Syfy? Current odds
Do we think that there’s enough story there to be a season? We don’t even think that this is a real question. There is absolutely enough story and then some. The third season of Happy! could be every bit as weird and wonderful as the first two, and maybe find a way to actually take things up yet another level. The stuff that Christopher Meloni is willing to do for this show deserves so much credit, mostly because it is so bold and different from really what we’d see anywhere else. The rest of the cast around him is equally strong, and kudos to the writers for finding a way to continue to make this show as entertaining (but also as completely nuts) as they can.
As we start to look towards a possible season 3 renewal, though, here is where some of the problems lie. When you think for a moment about the show’s ratings, season 2 isn’t exactly killing it. It is averaging currently a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, otherwise known as what really matters the most to most major networks and advertisers. That’s not great. This is a show that overall, is down more than 50% from what the ratings were for most of the first season. If this is a trend that continues moving into the long-term, that’s going to be a worrisome sign for its future. It has to be.
Also, remember that Syfy sometimes can be a veritable executioner when it comes to taking out some popular shows before people are really ready to see them go. We think that the odds are almost certainly high that this is a show that doesn’t get to see a third season, even if we’d like to see it happen.
The biggest thing going against Happy! is, unfortunately, something incredibly far out of its control — an archaic viewership model that does not apply in the slightest to its viewers and who they are in 2019. The people who are watching this show are, more than likely, young people — think along the lines of people who want to do everything within their power in order to watch television under their own terms. They don’t want to sit there and check out something live when it is very well easier for them to go off, live their lives, and then opt to come back and check something out at a time that is better suited for them. That’s great for them as viewers, at least until you remember that television is based on people watching live. That’s the disconnect.
In the end, we don’t envision viewers being too happy a little bit later this year when the fate of Happy! is revealed, but we’ll still cross our fingers and hope for some sort of super-dramatic renewal miracle.
