Agents of SHIELD season 6 ratings rise as competition fades

For anyone out there who was concerned that Agents of SHIELD season 6 ratings would crumble with it airing in the summer, last night’s numbers were a hopeful sign. It was the first night that it didn’t have to worry about airing opposite MacGyver and The Blacklist, and without that competition, it flourished — at least to a certain extent. This show isn’t every going to be one that just suddenly pulls in fantastic numbers completely out of the blue.

So how did Friday night’s new episode of the series fare? Think in terms of getting a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also 2.37 million viewers — the best numbers of the season in both metrics. Given that most shows tend to post their lowest numbers of the season (at least to this point) in the third season, you have to think of this as some really good news. Here’s another fun way to look at it — this is the most-watched episode of the series in live metrics since January 2018. That’s a long time and, in general, the viewership for season 6 is up versus the season 5 average, even if it is down slightly in the demo.

As for what is causing Agents of SHIELD to post the solid numbers that it is, you could look at the success of Avengers: Endgame as a factor. Meanwhile, another one may just be Netflix — with old episodes sitting over there, it’s possible that there are viewers still discovering the show and getting to enjoy it when it is off the air. We have seen Netflix in particular serve as a fantastic ratings boost for a number of different shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead — more recently, we know that it has brought more viewers to Grey’s Anatomy and worked in order to give that show some more life than, perhaps, it would have had otherwise.

We know that Agents of SHIELD is going to have a season 7, just as we think there’s a strong possibility that this could be the show’s last. Still, if you’re holding out hope that there could be a season 8, or some sort of spin-off series featuring a character or two here, these ratings do give us a little bit of optimism in whatever the future could be. We’ll just have to see if they stick around for most of the summer.

For now, though, we think that the series has a lot to be proud of — especially because we’re talking about Memorial Day Weekend! After all, there aren’t too many opportunities to see shows do well at this time of the year, when many viewers are off doing a wide array of other things.
