Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5 preview: War for King’s Landing

Game of Thrones

Next week, Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5 is airing — otherwise known as the penultimate installment of the series. That’s a tough pill to swallow, but all good things have to come to an end.

For episode 5, one thing we know is abundantly clear — things are going to get violent. We just saw the end of one war, and now, we’re gearing up for the start of another. This is a war partially at sea, with Euron Greyjoy potentially leading the charge in order to ensure that Daenerys and all of her armies are completely stopped in their tracks.

Ultimately, we’re at the point in the series at this point where all bets are off, and just about every person could possibly die. What we know about Cersei at this point is that she’s ruthless, cold, and she will do everything within her power to stop any invaders — including her own brothers Jaime and Tyrion. Euron, meanwhile, is someone we know to be vastly intent on getting power. He’s really just a charismatic blowhard psychopath.

We know per tonight’s episode that Tyrion’s strategy is to remove Cersei without destroying King’s Landing. Trying to do that will not be altogether easy. Daenerys wants to go in with full force, whereas Tyrion is opting for at least a slightly more political approach.

In a lot of ways, this is what makes this upcoming episode so fascinating — the strategy of it all. Game of Thrones is a show very much about tactics, about making sure that you find the right plan before you actually try to execute it.

Will the war end in this episode?

We have a hard time imagining that it will, mostly because of the fact that we don’t know what episode 6 would look like otherwise. Of course, it is possible that even after this war is complete, there are some other problems that could surface. Take, for example, a battle between the Starks and Daenerys. We know that not everyone within House Stark has the same feelings towards the Mother of Dragons that Jon Snow does.

In terms of run time, this is going to be yet another extended installment of the show. Basically, we’re going to have that for the remainder of the season  — one movie after the next.
