Blindspot season 4 finale will set up potential season 5
Yet, crazier things have certainly happened and you absolutely should not consider this to be a death sentence. We could still see the series, if nothing else, managing to get a 13-episode final season that NBC could plug in somewhere. Based on what we are hearing at this particular moment, the producers are certainly giving the network every reason in the world to bring this show back. After all, the end of season 4 is going to do what it can to set up another season.
Speaking on this subject via TVLine, show executive producer Martin Gero notes that the season 4 finale “would be a very bad series finale” — meaning probably that there is some sort of enormous cliffhanger at the end of this that will make fans VERY eager to see what’s next. Gero also expressed some confidence that there will be a chance to continue this story along on the other side:
“We’re very optimistic that we’ll be able to do a fifth season, and [the finale is] setting up the show to do just that… We’re not done yet.”
Personally, it’s our belief that if Blindspot gets renewed, it will be most likely for a final season — the ratings aren’t great at least in terms of live measurements, and this plus the show coming from an outside studio make it all the trickier for it to continue to be some sort of super-profitable success story. However, at the same time, Blindspot represents an opportunity at the moment for NBC to do the right thing and allow themselves to try and create a new paradigm — they can be the network that thinks of fans and doesn’t just try to trample on their hearts. That does matter and we think that it would certainly behoove broadcast networks to consider this more and more in a streaming age — with Netflix now canceling shows left and right, it does make a little more sense for them to present themselves as a friendlier alternative.
(Of course, the irony in this statement is obvious since so many people have thought of Netflix for years as the streaming savior for shows that get canceled elsewhere — even if it’s not actually something that happens all that often. Lucifer and Designated Survivor are the exceptions so much more than the rule.)
Of course, we anticipate there being a BIG reaction if Blindspot ends on a huge cliffhanger without a renewal … but we’ll cross that bridge a little bit more when we come to it.
