Luke Perry’s final Riverdale season 3 episode airs on Wednesday
In a new post on Twitter, Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that this upcoming episode airing on Wednesday is the final one that Luke filmed as Archie’s father. He also commented in that there will be some “words of wisdom” to Archie during it — it’s a way to remember the impact that Fred had on him, and also the show as a whole. Fred was one of the purest characters within a show with many dark edges, and the love of Fred is of a similar tone to the love that many had for Perry as an actor.
As for what is going to come following this episode for the Fred Andrews character, there is a sentiment that at some point, Riverdale will need to address it, whether or not it is this season or at some other point down the road. Given that many of the scripts were written prior to Luke’s death, there’s a possibility that the show will end up saving some of the larger storyline for Fred until season 4. Killing the character off, devastating as it may be, has to be the prevailing possibility here. While there’s a certain poetry to the idea of the character living, it’s hard to explain why you aren’t then seeing him on the show — just as it would be hard to imagine him abandoning his son. It just wouldn’t work for this character.
For the entire cast, we imagine that some of their most powerful work is going to come playing that story, whenever it may be. Luke was a beloved part of the Riverdale family and losing him has been difficult. He served as more than just a co-star to many of them; he was a mentor, and he helped to lead by example and show them the proper way to lead a career after finding big success with a show like this. He was one of the good ones, someone who found big-time fame on Beverly Hills, 90210 and then went on to still have a career after the fact without scandals popping up in every direction.
We miss Luke already, and we know that this episode, knowing that it’s the end of the road for the character, is going to be a tough one to get through — even if the story itself may have nothing to do with events that transpired in the real world at the time of its production.
