Designated Survivor season 3 filming wrapping up soon

In a new post on Twitter, series regular Italia Ricci noted that the third season is going to be done with production within a single week’s time — it’s really flown by given that production only started this past fall, but you have to remember that season 3 for Netflix is a much shorter episode order than we’ve seen in the past — there are only ten episodes officially ordered! That means that the producers are having to be a little bit more economical with their storytelling and find some great ways to push things as an enormous arc. For a show that is as serialized as this one can be, having fewer episodes may be a great thing. We just hope that there are a lot of viewers around in order to see it.
Moving a canceled show to Netflix is a risky play, mostly because there is no guarantee that the streaming provider’s viewers are going to see it — that’s especially true for a show like Designated Survivor, given that it wasn’t even on Netflix until after the first two seasons aired on ABC. This is why we’re hoping that there is going to be some sort of substantial promotion for the show when we get a little bit closer to the premiere, which is probably not going to be until late spring/early summer at the earliest.
As we approach the premiere, there’s one thing to remember — all episodes have to be done before Netflix can premiere them. It’s a little bit different than your average network show that rolls out an episode a week. Let’s just hope that the streaming provider has a plan to promote it, including featuring it and recommending it to many subscribers. It does feel in theory like the right time to kick things off, especially when you remember that House of Cards is over. This show may be able to claim a good bit of real estate in the political-drama world … or at least that is the hope of the streaming service at the moment. We’ll have to see precisely what happens when the show actually kicks off.
