Modern Family renewed for season 11 by ABC; will be final season

Modern Family season 9

It looks as though we are going to have a chance to see a little more Modern Family on the air, but it comes with a bit of sad news as well.

Today, ABC confirmed that they are officially bringing back the comedy series for an eleventh season and, to go along with that, it is going to be its final season on the air (final season, not canceled). That’s something that has been set up and/or rumored for a good while now, and we certainly do think that it is a move that makes a certain degree of sense. This is a groundbreaking, generational hit for the network and those don’t come around very often. It won Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys a whopping five years in a row and beyond just that, it remains a syndication monster. It’s also still funny, and that goes a long way towards wanting to keep it around for one more year.

There’s also just the notion here of there being a final season itself. This is really an opportunity for the writers to get some sort of proper closure to some of their stories and for many of their main characters, which they do frankly deserve after the show’s lasted for as long as it has.

In a rather-amusing statement, series co-creator and executive producer Christopher Lloyd had the following to say:

“For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment … We have chosen a different path by doing one more season of ‘Modern Family.”

Meanwhile, fellow executive producer Steve Levitan added the following in jest:

“Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives.”

Having a proper final season has worked out well so far for The Big Bang Theory and we certainly hope that it will here as well, though we don’t think that this show needs to necessarily built towards some sort of epic, earth-shattering finale. This is already a good series that has a format and style that works and with that, there shouldn’t be any sort of pressure to dramatically change things up. For example, don’t try to get super-meta like the final season of The Office did — this is a story about the family, rather than whoever is sitting them down in order to do some of these interviews.

Odds are, Modern Family season 11 is going to be premiering at some point this fall; we’ll have more news leading up to that point.
