Manifest episode 9 (fall finale): Who is Autumn Cox, really?
One of the major takeaways coming out of this epsiode was simply this: Ben and Grace aren’t going to be able to work things out. They’ve both changed and after Ben didn’t bring home Cal immediately in his new quest in order to recover the missing passengers, Grace really wasn’t able to tolerate it anyone. Yet, Ben wanted nothing more than to keep Cal safe, but Grace couldn’t see how what he was doing was connected to that. It was hard to ultimately see or understand any of that because of his role in the larger mythology of this season.
On a slightly different note, tonight started to show you that Michaela’s future with Jared is a little bit more hopeful. After her ex was nearly killed, she spent some time with him in the hospital and with that, it looks as though there could be something so much more here.
After everything that they went through over the episode, Ben and Michaela started to realize that they needed to move forward working together. It was here that Michaela also told her brother that she asked The Callings to save Jared. That happened, and with that she’s starting to believe that she may actually have some sort of control as to what’s happening. (There was another character in Vance who died.)
Now, let’s talk about the cliffhanger
Autumn Cox was at the center for most of the episode, and her role was abundantly clear — play an escaped passenger and someone who was eager to get better information as to what Ben knew and what he was planning to do. Her plan ended up working perfectly. She wasn’t actually who she claimed to be, and instead, proved herself to be valuable to the bad guys trying to collect information and then effectively use it against everyone else.
This cliffhanger wasn’t actually anywhere near as big of one as we expected given that this series has invested so much on the central mystery of the flight — with that being said, it does speak greatly to Ben as a character that he would far for this particular trick. This is a guy who wanted nothing more than to believe that there are others out there who could help his cause but alas, it set him up for failure in the end.
