Game of Thrones prequel casts Naomi Watts in lead role
Today, HBO confirmed that Naomi Watts is going to be one of the stars for the new project, playing a character described as a socialite harboring some sort of secret. We could easily imagine her being some sort of early member of House Lannister or someone else holding a great deal of power, riches, or influence. Yet, one of the things that is so interesting about this prequel is that it is set so far in the past that there may not be too much connectivity at all to events we know from the HBO series itself or the George R.R. Martin books.
All We really have to go on with the prequel comes via the following logline:
“[The] series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
With Watts on board, this series is going to have a reasonable amount of star power from the get-go; the only real question beyond that is whether or not it will work. The original Game of Thrones was successful thanks almost entirely to its story, and not so much anyone in the initial cast. (While Sean Bean, Lena Headey, and Peter Dinklage were familiar names, none of them were considered A-listers by any means.) Having a great performer here helps from the onset, but we need to know more of the story before we can start to figure out whether or not this story works in the slightest.
