Chicago Med season 4 episode 2 review: Jay, Will Halstead’s chorus of pain
(If you missed it, visit the link here to read our review for part one of the crossover.)
At the start of this episode, we wanted to have a certain degree of hope that the Halstead brothers would be able to see their father make it through this. Their dad was rough around the edges and occasionally nasty, but above all else, he was resourceful.

Yet, everything changed when it was clear that there was a one-in-a-thousand chance that their father wasn’t going to make it. No matter what he went through previously, this was a different time and a totally different circumstance. It didn’t feel like he would make it through the rubble this time around. Will, clearly, was so much more capable of processing this than Jay was, which isn’t a shock given his profession. Jay was understandably angry, but he was far from the only angry person here.
Let’s turn now to Stella Kidd, whose life was in danger and, for most of the episode, it looked like she would lose a lung. Yet, it was April Sexton (and her relationship, in part, with Severide) who helped to change things. She was patient with Stella and they came up with a solution that could help her continue to be a firefighter — the one thing that she loved more so than anything else. She’s not out of the woods just yet, but this episode did put her on the track of hope.
There was one other firefighter in relative danger tonight in Otis, but as Dr. Charles noted, his issues were mental more than physical. He was resistant to the idea that he was suffering from PTSD but Charles helped to convince him that occasional treatment was the right course of action. It was also the one way to ensure that he could eventually be released.
One more story worth noting
We’re talking here about a Jane Doe who was hospitalized after the fire, and was taken by the end of episode. It feels like the possible culprit here was the creepy lurker who we first saw standing inside the building in episode 1.

CarterMatt Verdict
A devastating episode for Will and Jay, but also one of the best performances from Nick Gehlfull and Jesse Lee Soffer that we’ve seen on any One Chicago episode to date. We have a hard time thinking that this crossover is going to get any better for the two from here.
