Emmys 2018: In Memoriam honors Anthony Bourdain, John McCain, Aretha Franklin
Some of the people who were highlighted through the tribute this year including Comedy Store legend Mitzi Shore, singer Neil Diamond, Let’s Make a Deal host Monty Hall, performers Burt Reynolds, Rose Marie, Jerry Van Dyke, Della Reese, and Reg E. Cathey, singer Aretha Franklin, and others. There are a number of names mentioned here who are not necessarily big-name TV actors, but we understand the idea of putting people on here who are not entirely known as stars first and foremost. John McCain is probably the most surprising inclusion given that he is known as a politician and war veteran, though he certainly had plenty of TV time over the years.
Are there omissions? Sure, both from this article and also from the actual segment. This happens virtually every year and it’s going to continue moving forward. The show did the best that it could in between both the song choice on the night and also the speech leading up to it. The one thing that we think the Emmys have mastered and recognized as best as possible is the personal connection that many people have to people they see on the small screen. They remain a part of the family and because of that, when you lose one of them it does feel a little bit like losing a family members.
Luckily, with all of these performers we know that there are going to be some other ways to honor and recognize these people for their work moving forward. The one thing that was a little bit awkward with this was having the In Memoriam segment follow Glenn Weiss’ romantic proposal during the show.
