Poldark season 5 spotlight: The future, possible endgame for Demelza

Demelza

As we start to look towards Poldark season 5 airing on the BBC next year, we’re going to do our part to spotlight many of the characters! There are obviously some spoilers from season 4 coming up…

In this particular article, let’s the focus for a moment over on Eleanor Tomlinson and her role of Demelza, one of the show’s strongest characters and someone with an extraordinary narrative arc. She’s seen her status rise in life, but in the process of that, she’s never managed to lose sight of both who she is and what she ultimately stands for. She’s done a great job of really staying true to herself and being a friend to those who need her — and also a wife to Ross, even if there is conflict that the two experience on a fairly-regular basis.

Moving into season 5, though, we do hope that one part of it can be put to rest: The past dalliances that they’ve had elsewhere. Demelza’s relationship with Hugh is in the past, and the same goes for Ross and Elizabeth. We want to see these characters moving forward and looking ahead rather than looking back.

To go along with that, we’d like to see Demelza have an even more prominent leadership role in Cornwall. She knows what it is like to struggle, and also what it’s like to succeed. When Ross is away in London, we certainly think that she is a voice that can be listened to, whether it be via farmers, miners, and anyone and everyone in between. She deserves her own adventures, whether it be helping the local community or working on some matters when it comes to her brothers. We do think that Demelza could be an interesting go-between when it comes to Sam and Drake’s religious mission and some of the other philosophies in town. Poldark is one of the few shows that gets religion right in that it doesn’t over-stress it and shows the natural conflicts that can come from working with a denomination that isn’t commonly practiced.

So what should Demelza’s endgame be? We want to see her remembered most as a revered figure, someone who fights for what she believes in and someone who can be an inspiration for others? She’s a wife and a mother, but she’s also a friend and so much more than all of these things collectively. She deserves to have her legacy cemented in a way that is so much more than romance and scenes where she is angrily kneading bread.
