Poldark season 5: Aidan Turner on aftermath of key series death

Moving into Poldark season 5, it’s fair to anticipate that things are going to be slightly different (Warning: spoilers ahead). After all, we are looking at a world now that does not include Elizabeth, and that is going to be a difficult thing for Ross to handle. She is someone who he considers to be a great love in his life — she’s not the love of his life, but she was still very important. Their relationship was an impetus of some of his early actions on the series, and beyond that they are both at the center of one of the most controversial moments of the entire series — one that may have led to the birth of Valentine.

As the series progresses now, George is not going to have that influence in his life, and depending on how he reacts to losing his wife it could be either good news or bad for Ross and his own family.

For Aidan Turner himself, though, it’s pretty clear that not having Heida Reed on the show anymore is going to be a big change. She’s been a presence and a friend to so many for years, and now moving into the fifth and likely final season, there is going to be that void. That’s something that he talks about further in a recent interview with Digital Spy:

“It was heartbreaking when Heida left the show, [and] playing that scene when she’s dead.

“Losing a principal cast member who’s been quite close to us all for the last number of years, it’s quite big. Losing a friend on the show is weird. It’s a funny feeling. That was a big one.

“Ross encourages her to have another kid, too, to hide the fact that he’s possibly the father of Valentine. So that’s obviously a huge one for him.”

The show will go on, but it certainly will not be the same. For viewers who are not familiar with the source material, though, this may still be a death that is hard to digest given there wasn’t too much build-up to it.
