SIX season 3 renewal: Why it’s not happening on History

SIX season 2 episode 5

Following tonight’s finale on History, we have to ask: Is a SIX season 3 renewal really possible? We’re going to have more discussion on this, so lets dive in!

Let’s start by getting the bad news out of the way here: The network itself has already canceled the show. They had to make a decision fairly early on during the show’s cycle due to expiring cast contracts and ultimately, they opted against bringing it back for another run. The reason for that is fairly simple when you look at the numbers — season 2 has been down 50% in both live viewers and the 18-49 demographic versus season 1. It’s hard to be any cable series and survive with this sort of ratings drop from one year to the next.

Is there still a loyal audience for SIX out there? Sure, but from the History perspective there is currently not enough of them to ensure that the show gets another chance.

So what about other networks? It’s certainly reasonably to look at other possible homes here just because of the climate that we’re in — also, we did just see Timeless saved for a two-part finale and Lucifer renewed for a fourth season over at Netflix. All of this should suggest to you that anything is possible.

Unfortunately, in the case of SIX it’s a long shot for the same reasons that we’ve spelled out above. If another network could guarantee that a SIX season 3 delivered the same ratings as season 2, there’d be more of a shot. Yet, there is no way to guarantee that and it’s very well possible the show comes back and loses a big chunk of its audience all over again. That’s clearly a risk that the powers-that-be at the network don’t really want to take and we do understand that. You’d also have to find a way to inform everyone who thinks that the show is canceled that it’s actually coming back — and at a new network, no less. Lots of money to invest in that much promotion.

Basically, our suggestion is to approach the episode tonight as the end of the road and if something happens down the line, be happily surprised.
