Netflix boss talks Save Shadowhunters campaign, ‘hundreds’ of emails

This weekend marked Netflix’s participation in the TCA Summer Press Tour, which is when executives get in front of journalists and talk about a wide array of different shows. At times, they are also asked about various shows that they could potentially save.

Today, that certainly happened as Netflix’s vice president of original content Cindy Holland was asked about the prospect of saving Shadowhunters, a series that was first canceled earlier this summer. The reasons for that are somewhat complex and due in part to financial negotiations; Netflix was involved in that, but more internationally than domestically. (The series streams locally on Hulu.)

Holland’s response to a question about the future of the series was fairly simple: She claimed that she receives at least a hundred emails a day about the company possibly saving the show. She and the rest of the company are absolutely aware of the #SaveShadowhunters campaign and have been for some time. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they will save it, but it is certainly notable that the campaign has made so big of an impact.

We will also say this: We don’t think Holland shut down the idea of doing the show completely like she did Everything Sucks!, a series that was canceled earlier this year due to its poor performance on the platform. It also had a movement to bring it back, but it hasn’t amounted in anything.

Our big takeaway when it comes to Netflix and Shadowhunters is simply this: The idea of it eventually coming there is still feasible and it is still worth some attention. Even though nothing may be happening right now, we also don’t think of what Holland said today as her shutting down the possibility now or in the future. We do think that there is a market for the show there, mostly in that Netflix does need more series catering to its particular demographic that produce this sort of loyal following.
