Batwoman TV series in works at The CW alongside Arrowverse crossover
Today (via TVLine), the news first came out that The CW is developing a project featuring this character (otherwise known as Kate Kane) for a debut in 2019. Caroline Dries, most known for her work on The Vampire Diaries, is on board at the moment to be an executive producer for the project alongside many other familiar faces from the Arrowverse.
Below, the show’s logline gives you an idea as to what to expect:
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
We really cannot say that this is much of a surprise, given that with Gotham ending, The CW can really leap on this project to give itself a little more clout in this part of the world. Also, she’s such an iconic character that it makes sense that the crossover will be used as a larger launching pad.
With all of this said, the fact that Batwoman is getting her own show does limit the casting pool for the crossover slightly. Many of the super-big names speculated for the part may be too busy to take on the role on a full-time basis, which is why we think more that an up-and-comer — or a character actor looking to have a big break — will more than likely be cast as the lead.
For now, we’re absolutely psyched about what this show could look like — and also what it could mean for representation on TV.
