Nashville season 6 episode 12 review: Deacon’s father and a dilemma
The biggest thing that we want to stress with this episode more so than anything else is simple: Charles Esten was incredible in this episode wrestling with his character’s emotions, starting with anger over the fact that his father was there before eventually accepting the situation as it was and determining just what he wanted to do. Eventually, that led to him determining that he would allow his daughters to meet the man, who was displaced after Hurricane Harvey and had given up drinking. This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but we still don’t think that forgiveness has been fully given here. We’re not altogether sure that we’re ever going to see that in general.
While Deacon wrestled with this, Scarlett was wrestling with her own problems trying to push Sean as hard as she could. He has PTSD and it really doesn’t feel like the right move — yet, Scarlett has never been on the same wavelength as us when it comes to her thinking.
We want to spend more time here on Alannah, given that her story was both sadly predictable but also relevant. Brad wanted to do everything that he could to make her into a star, including giving her a spot opening for The Lumineers … but with some strings attached since he seemed to want a little something more from her. When she made it clear that she wasn’t into any physical advances, suddenly some opportunities faded away. Jessie warned her about much of this but unfortunately, in this situation she had to figure this out on her own. She certainly still does have a musical future, but she’s better off running away from Brad as soon as possible.
Oh, and there’s probably another moment Alannah wants to run away from — Juliette walking in on her and Avery at the very end of the episode. Juliette just escaped her cult prison, only to come back to this. That’s a problem.
CarterMatt Verdict
Even though this is the final season, Nashville doesn’t appear to be in a rush with some stories. Yet, the Deacon stuff tonight was both powerful and everything we could have hoped for. Esten was great, and while we didn’t have that much for his daughters to do this week, we’re glad that the writers are really diving into some emotional stuff with his dad.
