Shadowhunters fans putting up billboard in Times Square to help save series

Shadowhunters season 2 finale review

The quest to save Shadowhunters is already coming to Los Angeles in the form of an airplane banner on Friday. Now, we’re also hearing that there is a chance to also see something fun in Times Square at the end of the month.

On Friday, June 29, fans of the currently-canceled Freeform series have purchased a roadblock billboard for five minutes at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue in Times Square. It’s right in the heart of one of the busiest parts in Manhattan, and also not that far from Central Park. For those wondering, a roadblock billboard doesn’t mean that the streets are literally being shut down — it tends to be a reference for a billboard so large that it commands attention and causes you to stop or slow down what you’re doing (hence the kitschy phrase).

The billboard, which is facing east, will run starting at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time. If you’re in New York next Friday, you’re not going to want to miss it! It’s a clever idea and we’ve got a feeling that there will be plenty of people on the scene to capture this given the high-traffic nature of the area. Plus, it’s just a cool thing to see — we know many casts and crews have freaked out in the past when they actually saw an ad for themselves in Times Square.

While this is not a promotion geared towards a specific streaming provider like the airplane banner is Netflix, that’s probably for the best since you really just want to appeal to as many different potential homes as possible. Netflix certainly seems like a logical choice given the recent revival of Lucifer, but Hulu still remains interesting to us given that they’ve already streamed past episodes of Shadowhunters in America. If there could be a deal worked out between them and then Netflix internationally, that could be ideal. Amazon is also out there given that they just saved The Expanse, and then there are some under-the-radar contenders. For example, Apple has been getting into scripted programming lately and could use a well-known property. Meanwhile, MTV seems to be developing somewhat more of an interested in scripted properties, though it’s not clear if they are planning to air any themselves or just sell ideas to other networks.
