Game of Thrones, Westworld not appearing at San Diego Comic-Con
In a statement, a rep for the network had the following to say about the decision / the reasoning for it:
“Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thrones and Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer … HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.”
It’s true that both shows do have a lot going on at the moment, but for Game of Thrones in particular this felt like a great opportunity to start to share a few details on the final season. The only reason we can think of as to why there wouldn’t be a panel this year is because there could be a final send-off to the show next year. After all, it’s still not 100% confirmed when it will premiere. It’s possible that the final season could be either airing or coming to a close at the time in which this panel happens.
Either way, the decision to skip out on Comic-Con does have its financial benefits, given that everything from travel to hotel to security to other promotional material for Comic-Con does come with a big price tag. The convention does have huge benefits for many shows, but it’s not exactly a requirement for series to be a hit. With these shows in particular, doing the event at this point is really more of a gift to fans to anything else.
