Animal Kingdom season 3 premiere ratings: An impressive start

Animal Kingdom season 3

Judging from the first Animal Kingdom season 3 ratings, one thing feels fairly clear: There are many viewers out there who are on board the TNT series already. Given that sometimes shows around Memorial Day struggle, this has to be a welcome sign for the remainder of the season — and, in turn, a season 4.

The premiere episode on Tuesday ended up drawing, in the end, a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic alongside 1.3 million viewers. While it was down slightly in the demo from the season 2 premiere, the good news here is that it was actually up in total viewers. Meanwhile, Animal Kingdom also was up more than 10% in both viewers and the demo from its season 2 average.

Is this necessarily a guarantee that there are great ratings the rest of the season? Not exactly, especially when you consider that there was a big reason for the Animal Kingdom premiere to generate some great ratings: What happened over the course of it with Baz. Scott Speedman’s character was at the center of a huge cliffhanger when it comes to whether or not he would survive … and he didn’t. With Baz gone, will that have any specific impact on the ratings? That’s something that you do have to consider, much as you would any show that loses one of its most-notable cast members.

Ultimately, though, we do think Animal Kingdom will be fine just because A) fans of the original movie likely knew that this was coming eventually and B) this is a show that is about the ensemble more so than just a single person involved in it. Even if the ratings fall off a little bit, it should still be in a good-enough shape to come back for another season.
