Why Agents of SHIELD season 6 doesn’t have to be the end
Is this going to be the final year of the superhero show over on ABC? At the moment, we do think that this should be classified as too early to tell. ABC has indicated that in moving the show, they’re giving it more of a chance of long-term success and maybe that is true. They can air Agents of SHIELD in a more favorable timeslot during the summer, and also with less competition around it. If this ends up getting the average ratings up slightly in the 18-49 demographic, we are willing to say that anything is possible. We’ve already seen this network show an extreme amount of loyalty to Agents of SHIELD, especially since the live+same-day ratings haven’t been great in years. It does have the benefit of performing very well via DVR, Netflix, streaming, and all over the world. A little bit of Marvel synergy also goes a long way, especially since this is the only Marvel show at the moment that is airing on ABC.
Beyond just the commercial reasons for ABC to want to keep Agents of SHIELD around beyond a season 6, there are some interesting creative reasons, as well — starting, of course, with the fact that in the aftermath of the next Avengers movie, the entire landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be different. On some level that movie could impact the show, and introduce a whole new level of creative energy that was not here previously. The creative now has certainly been strong, but who knows what it will like in the aftermath of the showdown with Thanos?
(As long as someone figures out a good way in which to save Thanos, we’re probably going to be happy in the end.)
