Code Black season 3 finale was written as possible series finale

Just in case you were worried that Code Black season 3 would end on a cliffhanger (an understandable fear) following the recent cancellation news, perhaps this update will serve as some solace.

In a new post on Twitter, show executive producer Michael Seitzman confirmed that he and the team “always suspected this would be the last season,” and with that in mind the final episode was written as a possible conclusion in advance. Obviously if CBS had chosen to renew Code Black that could have been worked around and continued, but as it is, we imagine that there will a good bit of closure in this.

The writing was probably on the wall for many over at Code Black upon realizing that the show was being put off until midseason, and to go along with that we are really talking about a series that was very much on the bubble in the first place. There were many different struggles that it faced in the renewal effort this time, whether it be airing in late spring / summer or coming from an outside studio, which many major networks are now shying away from. Almost from the moment that Code Black first burst on the scene this spring it was pretty darn clear that there was going to be some trouble with it. It’s still frustrating to have the news come out now, especially on the heels of the highest-rated episode of the season. Our sentiment still remains that if CBS wanted to cancel the show, shouldn’t they have at least waited to see how it fared next week after it airs its two episodes, back to back, outside of May sweeps? There may have been logistical reasons why they announced it when they did but it’s still a bummer to hear.
