The Obamas and Netflix have struck a production deal

Former President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama have signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix. The deal includes the couple producing television series and films for the streaming service.

According to Variety, they will produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docuseries, documentaries, and features under their Higher Ground Productions banner. In a statement President Obama stated his hope for the deal:

 “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The Former First Lady released a separate statement stating what inspired the couple to make their historic deal:

“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others. Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.”

We know that the content they will produce will vary, but will be their way of influencing the public with media? As many of us know, the media is a powerful platform that has come under scrutiny lately. However, the media has also been used in positive ways. Either by getting the public’s attention on any issue that receives little to no attention or to get people to wake up to reality.

This is the couple’s first big move since they left the White House and because of this the world will be watching. This is a former president moving into a field that is uncommon for political figures. President Obama is going to make movies? What? Yes, and it is going to be interesting and intriguing to see what they will produce. We aren’t saying that everything they produce will have a hidden agenda, but it’s interesting that during a time of real turmoil in this country, the popular former president is going to make content for us to binge over.

Ether way we can’t wait to see where this is going to go.
