When will The Durrells season 3 premiere in America on PBS?
Unfortunately, at the moment PBS isn’t saying much when it comes to announcing a season 3 premiere date, and the best thing that we can do at present is look at some past premieres in mind. Based on when season 2 premiered in America, it’s possible that season 3 may not premiere until the fall, potentially around the same time as PBS chooses to premiere the latest season of Poldark. A summer launch also seems possible, but that depends on whatever the network wants to put out then under their Masterpiece imprint. The important thing to note here is that The Durrells will return in some capacity, but it’s not going to be right away in America.
So why the long wait between seasons? There are a few different reasons for that. International licensing may be one — given that this is a UK series, it does deserve the opportunity to air first across the pond in the UK. British audiences do have to wait sometimes a really long time in order to see American shows, so a little bit of turnabout here feels as though it’s fair play.
Beyond just this, remember that The Durrells airs in Britain on an ad-supported network, and with that it has to be re-edited slightly for PBS. Think of this in similar terms to what we get with Victoria and also what we had in the past with Downton Abbey years ago. PBS also operates with its own schedule and mind — there’s not always a huge sense of urgency to premiere British shows stateside and they like to adhere to a specific schedule. That does help some of its viewers know when these series are going to be back on the air.
Rest assured that once there is some more news regarding The Durrells season 3 premiere date here in America, we’ll have news about it here.
