What Tobias Menzies’ The Crown casting means for Outlander actors’ future
If we’ve got one word in which to describe this move on a larger scale, it is this: Credibility. This shows even further the attention that casting departments are putting on the actors from Outlander and, at least in turn, some of the future opportunities to could be out there for great performers. This is important for a couple of different reasons.
1. It may attract even more outstanding performers – If you see that actors like Menzies (long underrated in this industry) getting roles based on this show, doesn’t that mean in turn that you are going to be able to find even more great talent in the future? If Outlander can be a springboard much like Saturday Night Live is for comedians, we imagine that it will be even more of a hotbed for talent in the coming years.
2. It may boost Emmy odds – Seeing great actors from this show land roles elsewhere does demonstrate further the success that Outlander has. It is more attention on a series that is deserving attention.
Hopefully, Menzies’ new role does enable some other performers who have recently wrapped their time on the show (Lotte Verbeek being a great example of this) to find major series-regular gigs elsewhere provided that they want them. We certainly do not want to see anyone end up getting a job that keeps them from making future appearances on Outlander if needed, but hopefully there will be plenty of work to go around for some of these performers. (In the case of Menzies and Verbeek, it is easier for the two of them to seek work when their characters are dead in the Outlander universe.)
There is always a chance that Menzies could return as either Black Jack or Frank in the future, though it may just be in a brief flashback or as a cameo. We don’t want to set any big expectations at the moment.
