The Bachelor finale: The ‘unedited’ scene is all sorts of terrible

You know that The Bachelor is a show that doesn’t practice the utmost of caring when they do something a little bit controversial — and you got a little bit more evidence of that very thing courtesy of how they chose to handle what happened with Becca Kufrin tonight.

Basically, here’s what happened — Becca ended up getting engaged to Arie Luyendyk Jr. in the closing minutes of the final Rose Ceremony. That would’ve been a little more romantic were it not for the fact that it was followed soon after by one of the most epic, gut-wrenching pieces in Bachelor franchise history as production chose to basically give you the full scene featuring Arie going and breaking up with Becca after getting engaged to her. This was painful, and completely unnecessary at the same time to show it on-camera. Just think of things in this sense — during The Bachelor itself, things were a little different since the romance was still somewhat confined to a television show. However, we moved beyond that to a certain extent in the breakup scene. This became something so much worse. It was just pure exploiting the feelings of someone after a relationship had already started in real life. They already had experienced some sort of life off-camera.

Of course, before the breakup happened we needed to have some sort of extended conversation with Chris Harrison explaining it — and then came the next part of it: Having to actually watch it play out.

What made this even worse was the way in which Arie carried the message to Becca that it was over — this felt like it was matter-of-fact and almost heartless. Basically, it was cold and cruel to do to Becca and the producers just went ahead with it anyway. They were certainly in their rights to do this — it’s their show, after all, but why? Why go through something like this when you really don’t have to? That just didn’t make a great deal of sense. What Arie should have done, had he really cared for Becca, was decide that he didn’t want the breakup on-camera and forced production to do it differently. He didn’t do that, and now he may go down as one of the most unlikable Bachelor contestants in history.

Sure, Arie is a real person and he doesn’t deserve the death threats he’s probably going to get — but he still deserves criticism for what he did. It didn’t help himself, it didn’t help Becca, and it didn’t help Lauren. The only people it helped were ABC executives.

If there is one silver lining here for Becca, it’s that she clearly dodged some sort of big bullet. Also, this is probably the best way for her to ever become The Bachelorette ever, not that we think that this was even remotely on her mind at the time in which she was going through with this. This was just more about The Bachelor wanting to give you the scene of someone getting their heart ripped out in real time.
