Game of Thrones creators writing new Star Wars movies; HBO future unclear
Today, it was officially announced that the showrunners — who were of course adept at transferring over the George R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire series to television — are going to be writing a trilogy of movies for Lucasfilm. These are not meant to be numbered entities in the series, but very much a part of the same universe.
In a statement, here is what Benioff and Weiss had to say on the subject:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since … We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
We know that there are clearly some big fans of Game of Thrones over at Lucasfilm, given that Gwendoline Christie plays a major role in some of the recent movies while Emilia Clarke has a part in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. Now with Benioff and Weiss on board, we wonder if they will bring in an actor or two from the show to some of their own movies.
What about Confederate?
Last year, it was announced that Benioff and Weiss were going to be working alongside Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Michael Spellman on the aforementioned HBO series, which revolved around an alternate universe in which the Confederate States of America still existed and were a modern institution. This series drew almost-immediate backlash when it was announced, and all talk of it has been silent as of late. HBO has not commented yet on the show’s future — it’s possible that Benioff and Weiss could depart, or take more of a behind-the-scenes role while they focus on Star Wars instead.
Ultimately, we do understand one thing: When Star Wars calls, there’s a pretty good reason for you to listen. We’ll see what else happens with Confederate down the line.
