Poldark season 4: Aidan Turner touches on Ross, Demelza’s future
Over the first few years, we’ve absolutely seen some moments where there was tangible hope that these two would have a happy, long-lasting relationship. Then, there were other moments where it felt as though the two were doomed entirely. The first one of these moments came after Ross was unfaithful and slept with Elizabeth (we don’t need to get back into the controversy of that scene.) Meanwhile, at the end of last season Demelza, feeling as though she was unappreciated and frankly ignored, chose to be with Hugh Armitage. He was a man fearing the loss of his vision, and more than that opted to pour his entire heart and soul into loving her.
So is there a chance to repair what is very clearly broken? The thing about Poldark is that it doesn’t present relationships as fantasy — much like any relationship in real life there are highs and lows, and in some cases they are even more severe (this is TV after all). This is something that Aidan Turner himself touched on in a recent piece with the Radio Times:
“They might start off a bit rocky and they might try to figure things out … It’s a very real relationship, these things can happen in a marriage … “I think we tackle it in a very real way. It’s something an audience will understand.”
What do Ross and Demelza need to do?
For starters, CarterMatt would like to see them communicate with each other! Ross needs to actually be open and honest, pouring out his heart rather than containing it. If he does that, we do think that Demelza will be much more fulfilled than she has been. Meanwhile, she should also work to be in a position that does not make Ross feel threatened. We would understand him not wanting his wife around Armitage after this, and she should understand that equally. It isn’t all Ross needing to change, but that is clearly a major component to their struggles. They just need to figure out a way to fully listen to each other’s needs and learn the right path forward.

The good thing is that there are eight episodes coming up later this year to address this relationship further, and in Poldark terms that is plenty of time. We’ve certainly gotten a good sense over the years of just how much ground a single season can cover.
