Vikings season 5 midseason finale ratings strong; set stage for hiatus
The final episode of the History channel drama this Wednesday ended up generating a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic coupled with 2.25 million viewers. In the former measure, this is the best demo performance since the first three weeks of the season. Meanwhile, in viewers this ties episode 3 for the largest overall total. Given that this season premiered after an extremely long hiatus, we absolutely think that History has to be happy with this. Add to this the huge DVR ratings for Vikings week in and week out and you’ve got even more reminders as to why the network wants to keep this show around in the long haul.
As for whether or not the second half of the fifth season can match these numbers, a big part of that is going to depend heavily on what the series is airing up against. For example, if the drama comes on in the summer it may be the beneficiary of less competition on the air. Meanwhile, if it returns in the spring or the fall, that could be challenging just by virtue of there being a lot of other stuff on the air at around that time.

As for Vikings’ Wednesday-night companion series on Wednesday, the latest episode of Knightfall ended up generating a 0.2 rating in the demo plus also 1.2 million viewers. The latter marks its best viewer total since the third episode of the season. Knightfall is a show still worthy of a chance and more attention; it has a lot going for it, but it’s airing at a time in which there are frankly a ton of other options out there. It has to fight tooth and nail as a result of that for virtually every viewer that it gets.
