Victoria season 2 episode 1 on PBS: Victoria, Albert, and Ada Lovelace
As a result of that, there is a lot to unpack in these episodes — whether it be the arrival of the magnificent Diana Rigg or Victoria struggling with her pregnancy.
However, what we really want to focus on here more than anything else is the show’s currency of power, and how being a royal does not necessarily guarantee you from other people jostling for control with you. That someone in these two episodes just so happened to Albert. He loves Victoria, and we don’t think that this is really in question. The problem is that he struggles being in the position where his wife is the one who holds the title and he has to obey her orders. He tried to defy them over the course of this episode in however many ways that he possibly could. For starters, he tried to take off from her to attend an event and spend more time in Lovelace’s presence — we see his interest in her as partly academic; yet, there was also a little bit of jealousy within his actions. He was upset over the power that his wife wielded and wanted to do something for the sole purpose of frustrating her further. Mission accomplished. While these two did manage to come back together in the end, there are difficulties now and difficulties that will likely come later.
For Victoria, another point of continue could be the presence of Lord Melbourne. While her heart is with Albert, there are times when her intellectual connection with Melbourne causes her to rely on him far more than she should.
Victoria is a story mostly of relationships — it’s the dynamics between people that played into how they acted in history. The same goes for the show. While Victoria itself may be glossy and somewhat-heightened, it remains one of the best British dramas out there and the season 2 premiere brought quite a bit to the table as a result.
