Should Hawaii Five-0 make McDanno’s Bar & Grill name permanent?

McDanno

Remember McDanno’s Bar & Grill from earlier this season on Hawaii Five-0? Who are we kidding — of course you do! This prospective name for Steve and Danny’s potential restaurant was first introduced earlier this season by Kamekona, and ever since that point it’s of course taken on a life of its own. Viewers are already calling the restaurant that and, at one point, CBS decided to make t-shirts due to popular demand.

(Just so you know, you can still buy one of those shirts over here, provided that you are interested.)

At this point, we really do wonder if the writers / producers will choose to call the restaurant by any other name when this one is already so popular. There is a case both for and against it.

The case for the McDanno name – It’s a wonderful meta-joke to a certain percentage of the show’s fans. It represents the writers having a sense of humor and the passion that is out there for Steve and Danny. It’s also instantly memorable; don’t you want people in the restaurant business to know who you are? A generic restaurant name doesn’t quite do the trick.

The case against it – It’s such an in-joke that we could still see actual patrons being somewhat confused about it, provided that we were to think of the restaurant as though it is a place in real life. Also, would Steve or Danny willingly use that name? Neither one of them came up against it!

What we could end up seeing at the end of the day is a situation where many other characters in the Hawaii Five-0 universe casually call it McDanno’s, at least the people who are already familiar with Steve and Danny. It’s possible they’ll end up giving the restaurant, provided it launches, a different name for the patrons who have no clue who or what a McDanno is.

One thing we do know? For many viewers out there, the name is clearly already decided.
