Saturday Night Live music: Foo Fighters perform ‘The Sky is a Neighborhood’

Fred

Foo Fighters were the musical guest on tonight’s Saturday Night Live fall finale and we needed to know zero else to know this would be great. They’re one of the best bands playing today and all of their music is live and authentic.

As for what we hoped to see from them tonight, we figured that it would end up being a mixture both of new hits from the group and maybe a little bit of Christmas music to celebrate being the last group on the show. Their lead-off tonight was “The Sky is a Neighborhood,” one of their big singles off of their album Concrete and Gold that came out last month. It was pure rock in the way that Foo Fighters do best, one with soaring vocals, instrumental portions, and in this case a ton of backing singers. This was a vintage Foo Fighters performance — it was live and perfect in its imperfections. Nothing was overproduced or done in such a way to make it feel inauthentic.

Yet, at the same time we’re not sure this would win anyone over if you weren’t a fan of the band already. Luckily, we are so we didn’t have much to worry about here.

Second song – This wasn’t so much a single song as it was Foo Fighters dabbling in a number of different things. The performance started with Dave Grohl alone performing the signature hit “Everlong” before eventually going into a Christmas classic and then eventually what felt like the rock version of the Peanuts theme. We enjoyed the majority of this performance just because it felt warm, nostalgic, and fun — just what you would want from the final musical performance on SNL for the year.

Fun fact — this is actually the band’s eighth appearance on the show! Once you’re starting to be invited places with that sort of regularity it’s pretty easy to understand why. You consistently deliver and there are plenty of viewers who tune in just to see you.
