Hawaii Five-0 season 8 episode 8 review: McGarrett takes flight
Over the course of the new episode that we saw Friday night, Steve had to figure out what caused an airplane crash; as you would imagine, that was easier said than done. He needed to figure out both the motive and the means, and it turns out that there was so much more at the center of this case than one would first think. The same can be said for actually arresting the responsible party, a man with a deep-seeded history and a reason to tamper.
The storytelling engine was one of the more interesting things about this episode, mostly because of how it started — with Steve in the skies as part of a competitive flight trial. That was actually a flash-forward to things to come later in the episode, after Steve made an arrest in the case. It freaked us out in the opening minutes, and it made us wonder briefly if the team had somehow arrested the wrong guy and someone was tampering with the plane still. Luckily, Steve was able to help the flight crew while living out some sort of Top Gun fantasy in the process.
Did we expect to actually see more of Steve infiltrating the pilot world tonight? Probably, but kudos to the team for making these flight stunts feel authentic. At the end of the episode everyone had a chance to get a bite to eat at Kamekona’s, and in the process we got a little bit of bonding between Tani and Junior. They’re the newbies on the team and it makes sense that they would forge a bond.
This brings us to the one story at the end of the episode where Tani paid a visit to her brother, who actually proved useful this week rather than getting her in to constant trouble. Seemingly, the two parties are now even … but who knows how long that will last?
CarterMatt Verdict
Probably the thing that surprised us the most about the episode was just how much of the story was geared on the process of resolving the case, getting the clues and eventually figuring out what happened with the plane.
Entertainment-wise what we enjoyed the most was the fact that Steve finished in dead last — and he wasn’t even close to the other pilots in the trial. It was a reminder that no matter how awesome he and the Five-0 team may be at solving cases, it doesn’t mean that he can take on someone else’s job and be somehow amazing at it right away.
