Fox’s American Idol rival The Four books Meghan Trainor, Charlie Walk, Diddy, DJ Khaled

Now that Fox doesn’t have American Idol they are trying something new with The Four — and they’ve got Diddy (and some more famous faces) along for the ride!

The network has confirmed than Meghan Trainor, music executive Charlie Walk, DJ Khaled, and the man otherwise known as Sean Combs, Puff Daddy, (and many other names) are going to be the ones judging some of the talent that turns up on the show. The format on The Four is a little bit different from your average singing competition, namely in that the show will begin with four fantastic singers picked as “finalists,” and each week new contestants will turn up hoping to knock off one of them. America will choose the contestants who make it and the judges will choose who advances. At the end of the season there will be a winner, and they will presumably have some sort of opportunity to become a star. Let’s be honest, though — there isn’t a great track record of singing competition winners the past ten years becoming massive stars.

In a statement, here is what Diddy had to say about coming on board the show:

“This show is going to disrupt the world of competition television and will revolutionize the format … This series is about pure competition, fighting for your survival.”

Meanwhile, DJ Khaled (best known for “All I Do Is Win”) also offered the following:

“It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that will showcase the best of the new generation of musical geniuses… I immediately jumped at the opportunity when I realized Fox shared the same vision as me, and that’s to be the best!!! If you think you have what it takes to become the next icon, trust me, DJ Khaled is the one that will let you know. So be prepared for a new era of television. All I know is how to win…more!!!”

Will this show be a success?

We’d put the odds at around 25% just because that seems to be the average odds of most singing shows. American Idol has spawned dozens of season over the past decade and a half, and The Voice and The X Factor are the only two to have gone more than just a couple of seasons in a relevant way (and with that, The X Factor disappeared after season 3). Sure, America’s Got Talent has a singing component, but that’s not the only reason viewers watch.
