Scandal season 7 episode 4 review: Olivia finds Fitz (and more power)
One of those fossils was the relationship between Olivia and Fitz, one that we loved for many years but one that was nonexistent before Fitz showed up to her door. He wanted to give her a case that he had passions for, one involving a wide array of missing minority women. He wanted to work with her — he wanted to help but he also wanted to work with her. We cannot emphasize that part of this enough.
All of these Olitz feels basically culminated in a passionate scene at around the 48-minute mark of the episode, one where Fitz made his case pretty clear: They were better together. In turn, they were weaker apart. He absolutely presented his case in a way that was confident in right in her wheelhouse of what she liked to hear. That’s probably why they kissed seconds later.
Another fossil with this show is the longtime struggle as to what it means in order to run Command. We’ve seen this dead horse beaten on this show time and time again and it happened again tonight. Olivia and Mellie found themselves at odds both early and often when it comes to how to handle the latest crisis with Bashran.
We’ll admit that the Bashran story isn’t the strongest part of Scandal just because it’s a conflict with a made-up country that seems to exist mostly so that A) Mellie can have a pseudo love-interest and B) she and Olivia can fight about it.
This is where Mellie’s heart got in the way tonight — she admitted to Olivia at the end of the episode that she had feelings for the President of Bashran, and that was causing things to get a little bit cloudy when it comes to the country. Should Mellie send troops into the country or not? That was the big question at the heart of the story tonight.
The decisions at the end
Quinn actually did work to resolve some of the missing-persons case for Olivia (while she helped arrange a special unit within the FBI to help in the matter), Cyrus found himself in a position where he actually decided to teach Dean Morris’ character the ways of politics.
Oh, and when it comes to the big moment at the end of the episode, Olivia found her father and arranged for a conversation. She is finding her power, but that can be very dangerous given what we know about him.
CarterMatt Verdict
Scandal season 7 episode 5 was a story chock full of highs and lows. We didn’t love the Bashran story until the end, but it was a thrill in order to see Fitz and Olivia back together — which in some ways back where she belongs.
