‘Shiptober: Should we root for Barson on Law & Order: SVU season 19?
In so many ways, Barba is the perfect partner for Olivia professionally in that they’re both super-intelligent, they both want the same thing (justice), and the two of them will do virtually whatever they can in order to ensure that they get it for some of the people that they care about protecting. They also bring out the best in each other , even if there are plenty of times in which we foresee both of them being extremely resistant to that very thing. These are people who are at times stubborn and don’t often look at things from another viewpoint beyond their own. For Olivia, it’s all about getting the case necessary to bring it to Barba. For him, it’s about making the right arguments. He doesn’t love all of her methods, and she doesn’t love all of his arguments.
In the end, it’s a collaboration and that’s why it works — they talk each other through their differences and they find a way to work out their problems, even when it’s not easy.
So why pair them up romantically?
For one, there is a clear contingent of fans who would want to see it happen? Also, they’ve already got a friendship — they know each other well and they’ve spent time together here and there beyond casework. They’re both in a similar pace in their careers and they’ve got enough distances from one another that they wouldn’t be constantly intruding on each other’s space either personally or professionally.
One of the only issues that we see some people having is that they wouldn’t want to see the fabric of the show change all that much and we certainly understand that. This is why we could envision a Barson pairing being something that doesn’t happen for a while if ever. If it doesn’t work out, for example, that could make the relationship a little bit awkward and SVU isn’t a soap opera. It’s hard-nosed and often about the cases. We do think, though, that since Benson and Barba are not soap-opera characters that they would be able to put their feelings aside if they had a case to work on — regardless of relationship status.
What do you think is coming for Barson?
In turn, what do you want to see for the two characters? Share some of your thoughts on the subject now in the comments!

I have an intelligent question to ask: Since it looks like Barba(Raul Esparza) will be leaving at some point this season(and possibly not coming back) because Philip Winchester (from Chicago Justice) is supposed to become a REGULAR on the show, why are we even having this conversation? There was a hint by the previous show runner(not Warren Leight) that Carisi and Rollins might get a little bit tighter this season, but then they got a new show runner. I have a feeling that lot of the show(when they are not catching bad guys) will be spent on the custody fight between Benson and the character played by Brooke Shields, who wants to take custody of Noah.

Hi Michael, I started this shiptober series years ago and my Mrs Carter column focuses on romances and what could be so this series is only focusing on that. There are other articles on cartermatt about SVU that don’t have to do with romance and/or ships that may be focused more on what you are looking for.

Thank you for responding. Can there be a romance with a character that isn’t in the show? Or is on leave of the show?

Any romance/ship is a good one. I know some people are shipping Benson and Voight from Chicago PD. There is no wrong ship :)

I’ve got a question for a future article though, Mrs. Carter. When will SVU have its first ever non-heterosexual main character relationship in almost 20 years?

Seconding this! Would love to read an article about a non-het ship. There are a lot of SVU fans who root for Barisi …

Hey, you know what’s cool? Platonic male/female relationships without expectations of romance being forced on them because we live in a society where men being nice to women automatically means love has to bloom. :D Isn’t 2017 grand?
To answer your question: God, no. They so clearly do not have romantic feelings for each other. Being nice to each other and different sexes does not = relationship. Not to mention prosecutors can’t date lead detectives on cases they prosecute, so Barba would either have to leave or…nope. That’s the only answer. Sorry, no than you.

Hi, I agree that there are lot of relationships that can just be friendship, but my column is about love and romance, so this shiptober series is focusing on romantic couplings that are either happening now or ones that people are rooting for.

Might we see one for Barba/Carisi then? It’s all over social media. It’s not as equally unlikely to happen as Barson because they’re a gay ship but if it’s not about canon but popularity I think it deserves an article. Rolivia too!

I try to cover only 1 or sometimes 2 ships per-shiptober from one show bc there are so many ships and so many shows, so i’m not sure if I’ll be doing another one for SVU this shiptober.
